Explore With Me: Jersey

Over the Easter holiday, my family and I decided to go to Jersey for a short getaway as this is the only slot that we all had time off together. Whilst we were there we visited: castles, war tunnels and many beaches. We also drove on the coastal path around the island so that we could see all the beautiful views that Jersey had to offer. This mini break was short but it was an amazing island and I would go back again- hotter weather without the language barrier or exchanging money.

Jersey is one of the Channel Islands which are near France, it is a small island 9 miles long- so you can drive around it in one day. Even though it is a fairly small island there is so much to do and explore. We stayed at the Apollo hotel and overall I was impressed with them. Their food and waiters were lovely and they were friendly and willing to help you in any way that they could. Make sure you try Jersey ice- cream- it’s delicious! The only downside to me was the bedrooms; they seemed to use really cheap shower-gel packs and soaps which just weren’t up to the standard of the rest of the hotel.

War Tunnels

This museum about World War 2 and the invasions of the Germans onto the Island was actually really interesting. The way they laid out the different rooms and the information was really easy to understand. I am not usually a history fan but I found myself very engaged in this museum-reading every single board as I went around- that never happens.

Mont Orgueil

This castle had amazing views from the top of the castle. There were beautiful gardens surrounding the castle and plenty of opportunities to take some amazing photographs. I accidentally deleted these pictures off my memory card (because I’m an idiot)  but thankfully my dad saved some of them!

Elizabeth Castle

A castle where you had to get a ferry which also turned into a car- the closest thing to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang I’ve seen, as it is situated on another little island on St Aubin's bay. There was a footpath you can walk when the tide is out which it was when we arrived at the castle and then once the tide was in, that path was no longer in use. They had an actor that talked about life in the 1970’s at the castle and showed us a cannon and musket firing which really brought the history of the castle to life.

Jersey Zoo

This zoo was pretty big for a tiny island; there was a good range of animals from monkeys to bears. As the zoo was part of the Durrell conservation, they also had some species that were not as well-known because he was all about helping animals that weren’t necessarily considered as cute.

Botanical Gardens

I love taking pictures of gardens and their Japanese garden did not disappoint from the pond to the different types of plants, it was such a pretty place. Unfortunately not all the plants had bloomed yet so there wasn’t a lot to see at that time, but you could tell that they had thought about the layout and appearance of the place so that when the flowers do come out they will look amazing.

Beaches

There were so many amazing beaches on this island, mostly sandy white and some were golden, they were stunning. We also climbed over some rock pools and climbed over a cliff that was about to get waterlogged which was fun. It reminded me of when I was younger and we would climb over rocks all the time. There were also some cliff paths that you could walk along and just take in all of those views. We also found an amazing viewing spot situated in La Corbiere by a lighthouse where I had a play with taking a sunset photo.

I would highly recommend Jersey! It has very different landscape all around the island so you will never get bored of watching the sunset and exploring. I cannot wait to go back! Maybe go to Guernsey next time?

Have you ever been to Jersey?
