Art As A Way To De-stress

Do you have a way that you de-stress after a week at work?  Well, my way is through art. I think it is important to have something to distress yourself; life can get busy and sometimes a bubble bath isn’t enough to relieve those negative feelings. There are quite a few side effects when you are feeling stressed out including, low energy & headaches so it is important that you take some time away and heal. I love those adult colouring books as a way to help decrease stress levels, but instead of colouring them in I tend to get some pattern inspiration for my own artwork. But I think that they are a brilliant idea.

I have had times where I don’t look after myself in those difficult times and I just found myself swirling in a whirlpool and there is no way to get out. It consumes your mind and doesn’t let you see anything clearly like your mind has a constant midst that never clears. I didn’t look after myself and I have promised myself never to get to that point in my life again. It was a tough couple of months. I have dipped in and out of art the whole of my life and it wasn’t until I did it after the event causing my stress had gone that I realised how important that is to my life. It cleared my mind, and I could finally see again for the first time in 2 months. I then made it my aid for any times when I feel that I’m steaming up to clear it before the fog starts.

You Get To Live In The Moment

I always feel caught up in the moment when I am doing art, nothing else matters than just seeing how my art piece will turn out. It is a great way to just live in the moment and get off your phone for a couple of hours. When I am in ‘the zone’ I don’t even feel the need to reach for Instagram and that is such a good feeling.

It Lets You Think Outside The Box

You might have a mundane job, or you might love your job but it doesn’t give you any new challenges. Producing some kind of artwork lets you think creatively and think outside the box. It is great to come up with new ideas and see how they would turn out in reality. Let your brain go crazy and have fun with it, you never know what may come of it.

Gives You A Sense Of Fulfilment

When you achieve something it gives you a sense of worth. I get this when something I couldn’t do before, I can eventually do it this time around. The most recent example of this is drawing character’s hands. I have always struggled with hands and when I tried it again, that time I was successful.

It Becomes Part Of Who You Are

Which is really important, you can discover a new hobby and then that becomes a part of you. It really helps to have a hobby outside of work to distract yourself and if you become motivated to keep it up, you will be rewarded with accomplishments for your progress. You will have something to talk about that’s different from work and it will feel good to have a distraction from everyday life.

Art is my way to de-stress, I love seeing how much I have improved over time and I really try to be aware of how my body is feeling so that I never get too stressed again. It is also great because you can pick it up where you have left off. So if you only have 10 minutes to pick up a paintbrush then you can always go back to it when you have some time later on. There are also so many different styles to art, and once you have found one that you love to do and could do it all day if you had the choice, then you really know that you have found something to stick with you for the rest of your life.
